Pictures in Calligraphy. Words in Calligraphy: Sixth. "Top Dragon." | 》

I-Ching. The Six Dragons series of the Hexagram Qian.

A Dragon a day.

Sixth. Top Dragon.

上九。

The Classic reads: Top Dragon is with Regrets.

My modern interpretation:

Conventional interpretation of this hexagram is that the dragon here is flying too high and thus, it is starting to have its downfall (regrets).

I think this interpretation of the oracle is not logical since the oracle says it’s auspicious.

The word to describe “top“ (Dragon ) here is “kang”亢。it means the throat.

The throat is the most important part of the Dragon. You breath, drink and eat from the throat. And you speak, roar and spurt water from the throat.

But the throat is also the most vulnerable part of the body. It cannot protects itself. It needs to be protected. That is the “regret”, that the Classic is talking about.

Leaders of the most high and mighty has their vulnerabilities. When they are aware of that (instead of just the enemies being aware of that), they will be in good luck.

I wrote the word regret a bit specially. The left side of the character is the erected heart organ, which I wrote it slanted, and thus look like the character “water”. The whole word looks like the Chinese word “sea”.

The sea is huge and deep and occupy three quarters of the earth surface. But the sea cannot engulf the whole land.

The bigger we are, the more we should be aware of our boundaries, and never cross it. We do the best within our boundaries. Three quarter of the earth surface is wonderful enough for the sea. This is what I believe the message of this dragon is about.
