Mr Wu Chao: Promoting the Way in Colourful Ways

Singapore’s legendary Master Yun Long Zi was in Beijing recently to attend the 2020 Chinese Role Model Awards ceremony, in recognition of his contributions as an outstanding Chinese.

It is regretful that I cannot meet him and show him around Beijing during this period. I still vividly remember my first meeting with Master Yun.

It was in late-November last year when several artists of the Shanghai School and I attended the inaugural Singapore Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage International Expo. During my time in Singapore, Master Yun’s name was mentioned numerous times by my local friends.

They spoke fondly about the legendary accomplishments of Master Yun in Singapore and that he came from a renowned fengshui family and was well-versed in the art of fengshui himself. Master Yun is also a professional painter who has held over ten personal art exhibitions in Thailand, the Netherlands and Spain, amongst other countries. His artworks are collected by renowned international personalities such as Cambodia’s King Norodom Sihamoni, Queen Mother Norodom Monineath, Princess Norodom Buppha Devi, Prince Sisowath Tesso, Sisowath Chivannariddh and Princess Norodom Chansita, of Cambodia. The Cambodian royal family is particularly fond of Master Yun’s works and they have built a strong relationship based on an appreciation of his art.

It is no surprise that Master Yun’s paintings are very popular in Singapore and are collected by art enthusiast. At the introduction of Mr Fu Wenlin, Director of Singapore Central Art Museum, I had the honour to meet Master Yun after his return from Cambodia at his fengshui gallery—Lotus on Water.

Master Yun has such a kind and approachable appearance, he is almost sage-like in his long gown. Being a hospitable person, Master Yun showed us around the gallery and introduced his works.

Master Yun started painting from an early age and in recent years, he has successfully incorporated fengshui elements into his artworks. Subjects in his paintings include phoenixes, dragons, peacocks, peonies, lotus, gourd, lingzhi, orchid, lily and other auspicious motifs. Every of his painting is a painstaking piece of art reflecting the amount of effort he put in. As Master Yun’s paintings are created through multiple overlays, it reveals a sense of depth which can only be appreciated by the heart. Elements of both Chinese and Western cultures complement each other perfectly in his works. The special painting mediums employed include precious metals which give the paintings an extra sense of magnificence. Its distinct appearance when in darkness and under the light, surprises the viewer, creating an array of brilliant images that one can only scream marvellous.

It might have been a few months, but I am still in awe whenever I recall that scene. Master Yun paid great attention to artistic exchanges. When he learnt that we were holding an exhibition in Singapore, he turned up at the gallery the next morning and we had a most joyous discussion.

While I only met Master Yun twice during my time in Singapore, he left a deep impression on me. Today, I am elated to hear that Master Yun’s contributions to the economy and cultural scene are recognised and he has been awarded numerous awards. They include the Chinese Role Model Golden Caldron Award, Charity Award, Outstanding Art Award and the Industry Leader Award. He was also conferred seven titles including the 70 Years of Nation Building I-Ching Gold Master title and was also appointed the vice-chairman of the “Same Root Same Dream Chinese Role Model” committee.

I would like to extend my sincerest congratulations to Master Yun Long Zi and wish that his career and art will rise to greater heights.
