Master Yun Remarks: Launch of Lotus on Water Chinese Culture Publication Endowment Fund at Nanyang Technological University |

Good afternoon,

Ms Lien Siaou-Sze, Vice President, University Advancement, NTU,

Professor Joseph Liow, Dean of College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences,
My most respected professors and esteemed academicians,
My dear friends, my clients, my clients’ children

Three years ago, the world entered into an era of pandemic, and we are still fighting hard against it. It has devastated every single person on this earth medically, socially and financially.

Master Yun and Dr Liow acknowledging the establishment of the Fund

The pandemic hits not only the health of people, but also the health of businesses. In March 2020 alone, 4008 businesses in Singapore collapsed. The next month, April 2020, another 8600 of businesses in Singapore closed down.

And I suppose many business colleagues would think I am crazy, to sponsor an academic and cultural project at this time, a time when most businesses are still striving and struggling to survive the torment of the pandemic.

Master Yun and Ms Lien Siaou-Sze

I am the founder of Lotus on Water, a registered commercial entity selling top quality fengshui related products, art and calligraphies. We have four galleries, side by side each other, along Upper Thomson Road. Three weeks ago, we celebrated our 16th anniversary.

When this country declared a lock down in early 2020, I had never seen such fear and anxiety hitting my people.

Frankly, I had no answer and no solution at that time. We prayed hard, meditated deeply and brainstormed more than five times a week.

Some of the outcomes of our brainstorming, meditation and prayers are as follows:

November 2020, I accepted the invitation of CCTV China to exhibit about 60 pieces of my fengshui paintings and calligraphies at the Great Wall of China. With great honor, I was the first, and so far the only artist who have exhibited art on this 3500 years old greatest seven wonder in the world.

In April 2021, we started the Art Beyond Museums project. We go to different businesses in Singapore. We promoted these businesses while we talked about my art and Laurent-Perrier champagne (who is our sponsor) to Singaporeans and the rest of the world.

The project proved to be a hit, and has brought clients to these businesses.

So we started our Art Beyond Museums overseas. We have broadcasted 13 episodes of Art beyond Museums England edition, we are now broadcasting Penang edition, following up with Bali Indonesia, Laos, Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia, Paris and Australia.

In March 2021 and March 2022, we imported the sakura trees, and served sake and cakes to all gallery visitors for them to have some poetic moments under the sakura trees.

Then, the Tang festival. We invited visitors to put on costumes of Tang Dynasty emperor and empress, and if they can recite a tang poem, we give them a door gift.

During COVID, we acquired 3,000 pieces of antiques from a seventy-year-old Italian gentleman. A few weeks ago, we invited clients to take family photos on one of the antiques, a Louis-Phillipe sofa we are displaying in our galleries. We had professional photographers on the standby and we gave the family photos to them free.

In October this year, we will collaborate with an internationally famous fashion and textile designer Mr Eric Raisina to have our third art exhibition cum défilé de mode in CHIJMES Hall, Singapore.

Monsieur Eric Raisina was born in Madagascar, citizen of France and trained in Paris. He flew in from Paris yesterday to spend a couple of days with me. Today, Monsieur Raisina is here with us because he believes very much in culture and academic as well.

Two months ago, we invited the international top sommelier, Daisuke Kawai san, to give a wine and art pairing workshop for our clients.

Above are just a few artistic and cultural projects we churned out in these two years. Some are Chinese, but many involve artists and culturati from other races and culture. And we do these warm and cozy events in the era of the most fearful pandemic.

We embrace not just a sentiment for Chinese culture, but also a Chinese style sentiment for all people “under heaven”.

Prof Qu Jingyi welcoming Master Yun

When you visit Lotus on Water, you see that clients are not there just to perform business transactions, they are there also to discuss art, touching antiques and artifacts, appreciate tea, wine and champagne, discussing high fashion, wearing traditional costumes, taking family photos.

In other words, our business have created a side effect for our clients, you may want to call this side effect, “a sense of bliss.”

What is a sense of bliss? It is a good blend of happiness and purpose. And with this sense of bliss, people desire to live better and longer. And living better and longer is what layman calls prosperity and longevity. Isn’t this something every human being should do to create for themselves and their fellow kind?

On the hindsight, some people say that Lotus on Water is either too willful or plain lucky. These few out of the box cultural and artistic projects have created for us a lot of clients and revenue. Some of them have brought us fame and reputation at a level we have never accomplished before. In fact, for most months, the income during the Pandemic Era has increased more than one hundred percent as compared to pre-pandemic era.

But at the moment when we were making those decisions for all these “money burning projects”, many people would have called us crazy. Crazy to “burn money”, in the time we should be tightening the seat belts.

Most strategies adopted by businesses at this era would be to cut budget, apply for grants or to borrow bridging loans. I refused to do any of these. If I had taken a loan, I may need to seek for permission from the money lenders before I can write a cheque to NTU.

Today, Lotus on Water remains number one in fengshui industry in Singapore and probably the world, in term of client size and revenue.

Ironically, none of my shareholders and employees has a degree in accounting, finance and business. My business partner Mr Kan Ying Loong graduated from Peking University, top in Chinese faculty. My top sales advisor Mr Cola Tay Wei Siong graduated with an education degree from a university in Taiwan China. I graduated in NTU School of Arts majoring in Chinese studies and English literature in 1996, and with a First Class Honors in Chinese in 1997.

No, it is not a prerequisite to graduate with a humanities subject to apply for a job in our company. But somehow people with humanitites discipline tend to stay with us the longest.

Ray Dalio, a famous modern financial guru has published a book “The Changing World Order”. He says that all the great empires went through economic cycles. The cycle went up and came down. Most of the time when the cycle came down, it would never recover. The Roman Empire, the Spanish Empire, the Dutch Empire and the British Empire all shared the same fate. With only one exception, the Chinese Civilization went up, came down and recovered again and again many times over thousands of years.

Henry Kissinger said in his book “On China”, out of twenty centuries, China has been the most prosperous country in the world for eighteen centuries. Only in the last two centuries China has lost in her global competition with the West and now she is coming back again. How can any country enjoy prosperity for such a long period of time?

Strangely, China never had an East India Company; China did not invent the modern banking system, the shareholding companies, a global reserve currency and internationally approved accounting system. And China still does not have a parliament.

China did not even have great economists like Adam Smith, John Maynard Keynes, Frederick Hyak or Milton Friedman. And China had no great scientists like Sir Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking. But the Chinese civilization has Confucius, Mencius, and the many many poets and the many many more fine calligraphers.

Could modern medicine save the world from illness? Probably so. But the pandemic showed us that the countries with the most advance medicine might not enjoy the lowest mortality rate in the pandemic.

Can the economists bring prosperity to the human world? Maybe. But the current situation shows that the countries that have produced the most outstanding economists are not the countries that have dissolved their own extreme poverty.

Can arts and humanities, especially the Chinese arts and culture, bring a greater value to the human world? I have very good reasons to think so.

In fact, the main subject of the national examination during the Tang Dynasty was poetry composing. And Tang Dynasty China was the most prosperous and powerful country in the world history.

In other words, no one can become a minister or a MP during Tang Dynasty without the ability to compose rhythmic poems and write beautiful calligraphy.

Can you imagine one day, our Singapore ministers start reciting poems and sonnets to each other in the parliament when they are debating over policy-making? We would think that something wrong has gone up in the minds of these ministers.

But that’s what the officials did exactly in the Tang Dynasty Imperial Court. And it is this same court that has brought China to become the most prosperous country in the world in every sense. Military, finance and culture.

And China during Tang Dynasty made friends with the Christians as well as the Muslims at the same time. We had free trade all the way to the Byzantine Roma.

The truth is seldom discovered with naked eyes; the truth is always discovered in our mind. Sometimes, the truth may not be discovered in our mind but in our heart, through our sentiment.

Today we are here to launch a Lotus on Water Chinese Culture Publication Endowment Fund in NTU.

In fact, this is not the first donation we have given to NTU. The last donation was the Lotus on Water Gold Medal Award and Book Prizes, which we started in 2013.

Every year since 2013, we attended the convocation ceremony without fail, except one year during the pandemic.

And last year, when I attended the convocation, Professor Qu Jingyi sat next to me. He talked to me about the academic journal he has just started, the Nanyang Journal of Chinese Literature and Culture (NJCLC) that includes the academic findings from the America’s Harvard University, China’s Peking University and Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University.

I thought, what a meaningful project this is. The gaps between people, that politicians, doctors, scientists and economists fail to bridge could probably be successfully healed by the academicians, the artists and the culturati.

Could Lotus on Water see any financial return by involving in this project? Frankly, I can not yet see in my logical mind.
Frankly, if I have not being an art and humanities student,
If I did not immerse myself in the study of Chinese culture in this university,
If I am not a grandson of my grandfather who was a gentleman that loved composing poetry and writing calligraphy,
If I am not the great grandnephew of my great granduncle who was an imperial scholar from the late Qing Dynasty, sent to Southeast Asia for diplomatic mission, I may not have the sentiment (the heart) to see the profound meaning in a project as such.

I have also brought along some of my clients who have supported me all these years to witness the launch of this endowment trust.

And I would also like to let my clients know that part of the money they have invested in us, I am now reinvesting into something that doesn’t seem so urgent but in actuality very important, which is to help build a better tomorrow for them and their children.

We may not be the wealthiest in this country but we are definitely one who is consistently eager to make sure that what we believe, and what we say, and what we do, are in perfect harmony.

I would like to congratulate Professor Qu Jingyi and all the members of Chinese Department NTU School of Humanities. I have high hopes with what you can achieve. I believe it will shine light to a world that needs recovery, peace, harmony and prosperity. And I appreciate you in taking the initiative to do so.

Lotus on Water, and the Will of the Heavens

For the ancients, and for Chinese at large, the matter of having the approval of Heavens has always been an important one. It's a matter of whether a decision is correct, it's a matter of whether a King has the right to rule.

A testament of whether a King has the 天道, is to see whether he has 民心, the heart of the people. And a way to observe where the hearts of the people are, is to see where the 神器、法器、礼器——国之重器 are gathered. For instance, when Shang Dynasty 商朝 conquered Xia 夏, the symbols of kingship and the right to rule inherited from the Heavens, the 9 Cauldrons 九鼎, were moved to the new capital.

It can be no coincidence that in our times, we see an ever growing number of precious artifacts representing a high order of culture, taste, power and spirituality, gathering at Lotus on Water.

The "First Blade Under the Heavens 天下第一刀", used at Beijing's Tiananmen Square on 1st July 2021, to commemorate 100 years of the ruling Chinese Communist Party. Three were used that very day, one is with the Lotus gallery.

A highest and most royal order of arts in Southeast Asia in modern history, Her Royal Highness Princess Norodom Buppha Devi, She gave Master Yun Her Apsara Crown before Her passing.

The magnum Blanc de Blancs of Maison Champagne Laurent-Perrier, one of most prestigious and still family-owned champagne houses, is with Lotus on Water. There are only three in Asia, and the only one in Singapore is with us.

The set of 54 seals of the "Heart Sutra 心经", carved by 晋欧老师, the most leading figure of Chinese art in Japan, a member of the very exclusive Xiling Seal Art Society 西泠印社, somehow found its way across the oceans, is with Master Yun and Lotus on Water.

We are where the Will of the Heavens 天道 points to. And where the 天道 is, the 旺气 will be.

And with the Heart Sutra seals, Master Yun shall be unlocking the universes of prosperity, into our blessed collections, and lives.

12214.28pm Facebook LIVE!!

云大师谈“日月系列”:“日”子的写法 | Master Yun on "Sun and Moon series": Thoughts on the Chinese Character 日

I always have some thoughts about why the Chinese character 日 (reads ri, means the sun) is so written.

My questions are…why wasn't the 日 drawn a circle, but four straight lines instead? And why did we add a dot (or a line) in the center?

When I studied Chinese Etymology, the textbook said that ancient Chinese drew the shape of the sun. But they drew straight lines because they were carving with knives on the bones and turtle shells. It was easier to carve straight lines then curves. And the block dot in the centre was that they observed the occasional incomplete combustion of the sun that created the black spots.

But no…after the most ancient bone oracles, most of the time Chinese used soft writing instruments like Chinese brush to write. It is definitely easier to draw a circle than to write four strokes.

Historically, Chinese characters are not totally formed by convention in a democratically “natural” manner. It has gone through many stages of official reformation, whereby the political leaders appointed the intellectual elites to canonize words after much research and pondering.

In other words, Chinese words are not evolved to what they are now through illogical arbitrary. The forms contain the highest wisdom of our civilization.

For instance, Chinese was a thousand years earlier than the West to discover that the earth revolves around the Sun. And in very ancient times, we Chinese already knew that when the earth traveled to four different corners around the sun, we get our four seasons.

Thus, I believe when the ancient Chinese said 日ri, we were not only referring to the sun itself (that is 日头 ritou, meaning “the head of the ri”). 日 ri represents the full solar system and the energy and effects the sun in this system can give.

The character 曰 ri, has four corners and four straight lines, representing the mathematical regularity the system observes. On the dot of time, spring, summer, autumn and winter arrive.

When sunlight falls onto earth, we see it as straight lines. Most importantly, the lights are physical expressions of the metaphysical idea of Yang energy. Yang is represented by straight lines.

The 日 ri I drew has small rounded knots on the four straight lines. The knots represent the stars in the solar system. And center of 日 is the sun.

日 ri represents the energy of greatness and Yang. It is self sustaining and magnificently strong (like the sun). And it is the one that makes the stars around move and evolve.

Master Yun: Speech of Gratitude, Only Overseas Chinese Artist to Receive Classic Art Award

For almost two years, I have not stepped onto the motherland of China. It is indeed, the pandemic that had separated me from my motherland.

However, China has given me numerous awards, continuously, to me, an overseas Chinese who has left my motherland three generations ago.

Today is the 72nd birthday anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. I am very honored to have received on this Chinese National Day, an award of Classical Exchange of Celebrity Artists. Instead of saying that this is an award of recognition from my motherland to me, I rather fathom this as an encouragement to all Chinese all over the world. We are not only bearing the same root and the same source, the same language and the same culture, we also suffer the same humiliation and enjoy the same honor.

In our battle against the pandemic, the war is not over. The winners and losers are not final. But we can see that my motherland China is ahead of the race.

That’s because we are clear in our Chinese blood: to be united is more important than to compete, and that the team is more important than individuals, and duty is higher than rights.
My ancestors left our motherland three generations ago to Southeast Asia. I was born in Malaysia, and 37 years ago, I came to Singapore. Last year, I was given the citizenship of Singapore.
As compared to most Chinese, I underwent a slightly different political background and baptism of social education.
However, I share with most Chinese, the same ancestors, the same history, and the same language.

Before the pandemic attacked the human race, I had my art exhibitions in Singapore, Thailand, the Netherlands, and Spain. I was planning for my exhibitions in Cambodia's Angkor Wat, France, England and America. But because of the pandemic, all these are delayed.

However, last year, when pandemic was at its fiercest tide, I was invited to the Great Wall of China to exhibit my Feng Shui paintings and my Feng Shui calligraphies. I displayed my art with a heart of gratitude on the oldest and greatest Great Wall of China.

From an artist’s point of view, I find it quite puzzling. The many, many countries who acclaimed themselves as lovers and patrons of art, in the face of the adversity of the pandemic, have not stopped protests and strikes, have not stopped political struggles and conflicts, but have stopped in their promoting and supporting of art and culture.

And when I looked at my motherland China, her footsteps to support and promote art and culture, have never stopped, with or without the pandemic.

At my art exhibition on the Great Wall of China, there was an old General of eighty over years old. He was helped by two young men, and with a few other teammates of sixties, seventies years old, walked up to the Great Wall to support my art.

Because I am not a Chinese citizen, I could not fly into China during the pandemic. But when I received the videos and photographs sent by my Chinese partner from the Great Wall, tears filled my eyes.

I was moved. This old General has never met me before. But despite physical infirmity, was like a cheerful young man, climbed up the Great Wall, participated the exhibition, supported the culture and promoted the art.

And I am even more moved. That my motherland China, a great dragon of five thousands over years as a magnificent civilization, has not looked down on a son who has left her bosom for three generations, and has no fear of the challenges of the pandemic, to recognize me as an artist with the warmest hospitality, and to promote art in truest actions.

The words shall cease but the spirit never.

On this day, the seventy-second birthday of the People’s Republic of China, I wish my motherland:

Everlasting youthfulness!
Long live forever!

Master Yun on "Sun and Moon series": Kun Motif

The series of “Sun and Moon”.

Kun Motif.

I use orangy yellow to represent the moon, which also represents Kun or Yin. The swirl is reversed clockwise (or anti clockwise).

The moon does not give out light of her own. She reflects the light of the Sun.
It seems like the moon is useless, but actually she affects the tides of the water.
When the moon is close to us, the water tides go up and the sea water will flow reverse back up the river. (That’s why my Kun Motif turns anti clockwise )
The reverse flow of the seawater brings minerals and nutrients up the river. Many kinds of fishes and water creatures breed as they swim upstream.

The energy of Kun (moon) brings about harvest and prosperity to human being.

Thus the Kun Motif symbolizes prosperity.

Master Yun on "Sun and Moon series": Qian Motif

Recently I have some inspiration to do a series of fengshui calligraphies.

The series is called “Sun and Moon”, or “Qian and Kun”.

Because I innovated the Qian and Kun motifs.

The Sun is a concrete object, Qian and Yang means the Sun, but are metaphysical concepts.
So I use an abstract artistic motif to symbolize it. And I call it Qian Motif.

My Qian Motif is painted with green ultra Violet paint with Cyan dye from the plants. The motif is turned clockwise.

Qian is Yang, also the Sun.

All the energy of the Earth comes from the Sun. The Sunlight moves along the time (so the motif is clockwise), to arrive the earth, and through photosynthesis (so the motif is green and cyan) and becomes the energy in the plants.
The animals, including human beings, absorb the energy of the plants, and gain energy for the bodies.
Even when the bodies perish, the energy exists, becoming the rich soil, and fossils and fossil fuels…. On earth, transforming in forms with the flow of time.

Thus is the energy of Qian.

I draw out the Qian Motif.

FOUNDING FATHER of Fengshui Arts (Part 1): Master Yun Long Zi

Master Yun, FOUNDING FATHER of fengshui arts (part 1).

Yes, even fengshui can be an art.

That is, after Master Yun listened to his inspirations, endeavored despite “common” business sense, and led well ahead of fengshui or art experts, for years.

Master Yun presents his fengshui art mainly through fengshui paintings and fengshui calligraphies.

And since they are art, they are, firstly, beautiful.
(Seems like a redundant statement to make, but trust me, there is “art” nowadays that’s downright ugly...some, on purpose, some, unintentionally so.)

The beauty of Master Yun’s art appeal to the senses of the people, even to the many who are uninitiated. Probably that’s why, many who have collected Master Yun’s fengshui art, that’s their first painting or calligraphy they have ever invested in.

For the seasoned art collectors, while they can decipher Master Yun’s fengshui art with their years of technical experience and collectors’ wisdom, benchmark against the works of other contemporary artists and grand masters of bygone times, and extrapolate the potential value of Master Yun’s fengshui art, they too, are moved by the splendid beauty of Master Yun’s fascinating colors, powerful strokes, and abundance of glittering gold.

As one of my Hong Kong client who is also an art connoisseur (he has super VIP access to all prestigious art fairs in Hong Kong, and the top art galleries all know him by name...that kind of level) said: he can feel the energy from Master Yun’s fengshui art.

One can really say: Master Yun’s fengshui art speaks to our souls.

And for a piece of art to be beautiful and soulful, it has to be (at least) original and authentic. Not just any clichés (no offense to the overused “9 horses” or “8 kois” imagery...they are just different), not just any prints or soulless imitations, not just something that can be bought from Taobao and resold to Singaporeans under the guise of flowery marketing...

I am sure Singaporeans are wise enough.

I am sure art collectors, all around the world, are tasteful enough.

And I suppose that’s why, Master Yun’s fengshui art are sold at a record breaking momentum, and collectors proudly displaying them.

(to be continued...depending on my time)

FOUNDING FATHER of Fengshui Jewelry: Master Yun Long Zi

Master Yun, FOUNDING FATHER of fengshui jewelry.

Now, we are all familiar with fengshui jewelry. Intimately so, for sure, since you are wearing your Lotus collections, beautifully, proudly, prosperously.

The concept of wearing something to improve one's luck, I think it definitely has been around for a while. But it was really Master Yun who insisted on it, persisted on the high standards, defined what can wear and what cannot wear...and coined the term "fengshui jewelry".

Jewelry that is tasteful, elegant, and can improve your fengshui.

Long, long ago, in one of our earliest blog articles, Master Yun has already made this clear, the direction of Lotus on Water:

Who and What is Lotus on Water?

Yes. Lotus on Water is a glorious Feng Shui revolution.

She is more concern with the prescription of Feng Shui than the diagnosis of it. In other words, she presents you the cure and not the inspection, the medicine and not the physician, the solutions on how to let Feng Shui bring your dream to reality than to tell you what you are destined.

In short, the reward and not the decree.

And even clearer over here, on what can be considered as an up-to-standard Lotus on Water fengshui jewelry:

Master Yun: Lotus on Water Sells Nothing, But These

The treasures sold in our galleries—jadeite, agarwood, sandalwood, Duan Xi inkstone, crystal Buddha statues—have been used for a long time in human history. This is why 90% of the treasures we sell can be found in auction houses.

Humans are fickle and our interest does not last long. We can be into something today and go crazy over another tomorrow. But there are a small number of things that stand the test of time, maintaining and proving its value.

And Lotus on Water sells nothing, but these.

AND, what's more, the Lotus fengshui jewelries are created by Master Yun himself.

You have already seen how creative Master Yun is with his fengshui paintings and calligraphies. Let us remember, Master Yun's creations in the realm of fengshui art, also manifest through fengshui jewelry.

Take our jadeite Zodiac Guardian Buddha series for instance. Though we just released this series in 2020, Master Yun actually already drafted/sketched them way back in 2015.

Also the top favorite Lotus jadeite Zhong Kui 钟馗, which so many clients have been buying since the gallery was founded. I still remember how I remarked to Master Yun in 2006, that how would anyone buy such a fierce-looking (like, 面目狰狞) design...guess what?

And also the Lotus jadeite ammonite 玉彩螺. When the gallery first started, a client brought over a fossil ammonite and asked if we sell something like that. I said, we only sell fengshui jewelries carved of jade. To which this client said: oh, I will definitely buy one if you carve a jadeite ammonite. And Master Yun went ahead to design and had them carved. Guess what, she didn't come back to buy. But the jadeite ammonite became one of our hottest collections, even till today.

Each line of fengshui jewelry has its origin story, which fuels the souls of the Lotus collections. Which is probably also why, it just feels different wearing Lotus fengshui jewelry. The unexplainable sense of wholesomeness, fulfillment, happiness...I am sure you can feel the soul and spirit of your Lotus collections.

As if they are alive.

It is free-of-charge to make ridiculous and laughable claims in today’s world. And there’s endless people doing that, claiming that they come from a lineage of fengshui masters (with no proof whatsoever), claiming that they came up with this or that design (which is blatantly a copy, and worse, a lousy and ugly imitation)...but I suppose sensible people can see and feel the difference.

The difference between soulless imitations that can’t even catch up with our dust, and authentic pieces from the FOUNDING FATHER of fengshui jewelry.

Proud to be the source.
