A First in the Art World – A Feng Shui Art Exhibition (风水画展)

Singapore, March 3, 2017 (ION Publication) – In an audacious move to marry the occult science of Feng Shui (风水) with the arts, "The Symphony of Prosperity and Elegance" will be the first Feng Shui Art exhibition that is meditatively and elegantly curated to bring joy and auspiciousness to its patrons. It is an exhibition of Feng Shui art by Master Yun Long Zi, 云龙子大师.

“Broadly speaking, Feng Shui paintings use subject matters that depict good fortune and luck. Some of the subject matters include peonies, peacocks, mountains, brooks, Koi and Lotuses. Feng Shui paintings are believed to bring good luck to viewers because on a psychological level they suggest good fortunes and positive ideas to viewers.” explained Master Yun Long Zi, a Feng Shui Master of sixth generation in the family line, most well known as the founder of Lotus on Water – the top Feng Shui brand in Singapore.

“At the moment, most paintings purported as Feng Shui paintings in the market are created neither by artists nor Feng Shui Masters.” elaborated Master Yun who is also the artist behind all the paintings in the exhibition. Master Yun’s artistic inclination started at an early age; he has been learning and practicing both Chinese and western arts ever since. His stellar accolades include winning the Singapore Youth festival art exhibition in his teens, graduating with a First Class Honors in Chinese Language and Cultural Studies, topping in NTU School of Arts and School of Science, and winning the Dr Wu Teh Yao Book Prize.

“The Symphony of Prosperity and Elegance” showcases the exquisite art of Master Yun with peacocks as the main subject matter. He explains that peacocks symbolize not just prosperity, but also elegance and glory which is why the title of this exhibition is called "The Symphony of Prosperity and Elegance ".

The artistic style and approach are so quintessentially his that they defy conventional definitions of realism, expressionism or impressionism movements or even that of Chinese paintings.

In short, there is nothing typical about Master Yun’s art.

While some of his paintings are painted on Chinese rice paper, many in this exhibition are painted on a one-of-a-kind paper known as Dong Ba paper, which is made from herbs from the mountain ranges and handmade by tribal shamans. It is believed that Dong Ba paper is sacred and can last for more than a thousand years.

Most uncommonly, his paintings are crowned by precious natural elements such as 24K gold, pure silver & bronze, and natural vermillion ink. The latter is believed to be effective in warding off evil while bringing good wishes of all symbolisms in the paintings to life.

An added feature of his paintings is the use of a special painting medium that glows under UV lights in the dark. It is purposefully included into Master Yun’s paintings to actualize the metaphor of hope in darkness, that silver lining even in the dark.

At the time of press, we are still anticipating ION Management’s approval for a twenty-second light dimming period at every twenty-minute interval, so that the full glowing effect of the paintings can be experienced by the patrons.

Besides the thematic peacocks, the exhibited paintings will also feature such auspicious subjects as cranes, Hulu plants, eagles and Master Yun’s signature peonies, each of which carries special symbolisms and when intertwined can project an empowering aura of fortune, strength and bliss.

The paintings will also be accompanied by art installations of living elements such as real plants and flowers, bamboos, peacocks and fish, exuding a breath of life into the exhibition. Called the "Lou Hey", a special Chinese dish served during the Chinese New Year period, the installation in this exhibition will be a re-interpretation of the concept of prosperity, making "The Symphony of Prosperity and Elegance" not just a visual symphony but an exhibition that requires experiencing in person.

We are pleased to announce that “The Symphony of Prosperity and Elegance” will be graced by His Royal Highness Prince Tesso Sisowath as the guest of honour during the opening night. The first one hundred guests with invitation card will also receive an exquisite silver cup from Lotus on Water (please contact Lotus on Water for more information on how to receive the invitation card).

"The Symphony of Prosperity and Elegance" is only available for 5 days from 26th – 30th April 2017 at the ION Art Gallery (Level 4). For more information, please contact Ms Joan HO at joan@lotusonwater.com.
